Shahar Yeri Historical Site

When it comes to historical monuments and structures in Iran, no doubt people would automatically think of Persepolis and its glorious columns and stone reliefs. However, as globally recognized and celebrated Persepolis is, there is more to Iran’s ancient historical structures than that. One of these less known locations is Shahar Yeri Historical Site in the Ardabil Province. This place which is a must-see for ancient history enthusiasts is located in Meshginshahr City 60 Km west of Ardabil’s capital city. The site is approximately 400 hectares and includes ruins of a castle, a temple and a cemetery. There are a number of strange-looking statues and some carved stones which stand out in the site.. The structures in Shahar Yeri Historical Site is said to be at least 6000 years old. Some of the statues which were built in the human form would undoubtedly capture your attention as they are quite uncanny. For example, these human-resembling statues do not have any mouths, something which could be as baffling for the common eye as it is intriguing for the archeologist. This one-of-a-kind collection is absolutely worth the visit and if you are planning to visit Iran and particularly the Ardabil Province, you should give it a chance.
